Self-Hygienic Ceramics via a Cost Effective Antimicrobial Nanocoating (HYGIENANO)
Microorganisms pose big infection risks in daily life, and sometimes even cause big casualties. The ultimate goal to achieve total hygiene is not possible with regular cleaning since there is no control between cleaning cycles. However, this can be done by using products (e.g. ceramic tiles, sanitaryware) with microbicide feature if there will be:
- No harm to environment
- No change in actual product cost
- No big CapEx required for ceramic OEMs for implementation

Recording and analysis of the acoustic spectrum to prevent pump failures
The project aims to develop an innovative diagnostic system for on-line Acoustic Control (AC) of pumps to predict their safe operation time. Sophisticated Multi-Pump Systems (MPS) are widely used in different industrial sectors such as the oil & gas industry, petrochemistry, power plants, materials production etc. All pumps are identified by high-speed rotating parts which have limited life-time. Pump failures result in enormous reparation cost. In some cases reparation is 100-400 times more expensive than preventive safety measures. Forecasting pump failures and replace worn-out parts in a timely manner can save significant amount of money for plant/machine operators.

Improved efficiency of raw materials by using secondary aluminium alloys, optimized melt conditioning, and integrated quality control tools (TA)
Using recycled aluminium-silicon alloys is highly interesting from both the environmental and economical point of view. The use of this new raw material is nowadays restricted to castings
with low mechanical property requirements. This is because of the presence of increased
amounts of impurities (oxides and brittle iron compounds) which impair mechanical properties, especially, ductility, fracture toughness and fatigue resistance. The ambitious aim of the proposed work is to produce sound and high performance castings using secondary alloys or high amounts of scrap (>40%) by improving the melt quality of these materials via a novel melt processing consisting of chemical and physical melt treatments.

MOULDIECAST-High pressure die castings with improved ductility at low cost
The necessity of preserving resources and to reduce environmental pollution makes light
weight concepts highly interesting for transportation. The main reason for reduced ductility in
HPDC parts is the presence of porosity due to air entrapment during mould filling. At the present aluminium components with high mechanical property requirements of vehicles are produced by the expensive high vacuum die casting process. The reduced porosity achieved by this process allows to perform a T6 heat treatment and to join the parts by welding processes. However, these parts constitute a niche market reserved to upper range vehicles. The technologies  urrently in use aim at the absolute top of the tensile properties accessible to AlSiMg alloys with anti-sticking Mn additions (of the type Silafont 36 o Aural 2). High vacuum is obtained by proprietary processes such as MFT or Vacural. The objective of this project will be to extent the market of aluminium components to lower class vehicles by reducing the cost of VPDC parts with high mechanical property requirements. The target mechanical properties will be between those of conventional high pressure die castings and high vacuum HPDC parts.

interaction through play and fun in order to improve the action-reaction relationship, the
participation and the positive feelings of control and sense of agency; it is important
considering that many of these people are withdrawn and isolated, with very little access to
adequate toys, when playing is an essential activity for human beings.

MWPTT - MICROWAVE POWER TRANSISTOR TECHNOLOGY
A high voltage LDMOS transistor in combination with the low voltage logic is a key element for a huge number of products, applications and markets like power supplies, power amplifiers for the base stations and terminals, motor control, printers, display drivers and many others. The performance of the DMOS drivers is very critical for the energy efficiency, size, weight and price of the said power systems. The present proposal concentrates on the development of the RF power transistors and their packaging concepts. The laterally diffused MOS (LDMOS) transistor technology is in the key focus. The IP on the LDMOS structures owned by one partner of the consortium enables the increase of the transistor current drive capability more than a factor of three as compared to the current state of the art. This has already been verified via the simulations and pilot fabrication runs. Further improvements like the reduced output capacitance is leading to the situation, where the silicon device technology can compete or overperform the GaN devices.

FEASIBRAIN: Feasible Brain-Computer Interfaces for long-term user sessions
The range of available electronic devices for the end users has grown considerably in recent
years. This has influenced services in different contexts, such as education, entertainment,
home, work, etc. In addition, input technologies have also improved remarkably in a clear trend towards being self-adaptive to the user. Different collectives such as the disabled, the elderly and people without special needs pose different requirements that can be met through self-adaptivity. Among such input technologies, brain-computer interfaces (BCI) have evolved to near-market status. In this project we will research and develop brain-computer interfaces for communication and control, featuring a smooth learning curve, and designed for long-term use.

ConMon
Development of an in-line multi-parameter oil condition monitoring system including a novel oil corrosion sensor for bio-fuel operated industrial combustion engines

TURBOILSEN - Development of a robust and low cost in-line infrared spectroscopic sensor for monitoring of the oil condition in industrial gas turbines
The lubricating oil in industrial gas turbines has a twofold function, lubrication and cooling, thus it is exposed to very high temperatures leading to an accelerated thermal degeneration of the oil. Industrial gas turbines operate with an oil fill of several hundred litres, thus the costs of an oil change are high. For this reason there are intense efforts to extend the oils change intervals and to reduce these costs. However, form all the approaches only some oil cleaning methods could be commercially established. Even these methods are only applied while monitoring the oil quality in parallel. Due to the high value of these machines, only laboratory oil analysis is currently accepted as trusted method for monitoring of the oil quality, because the available on-line oil sensors do not provide any direct correlation to the laboratory methods. However, a laboratory oil analysis, even though it is the most accurate method, has two major drawbacks: it takes a long time and it provides only punctual information about the oil quality. The operator needs to take and to send an oil sample to the laboratory (two or three days) where it is analysed (in about one week). Thus the results are almost two weeks old at the time the operator receives them. Furthermore laboratory analysis is associated with significant costs, enforcing a compromise in the frequency of analysis intervals. Thus the operator has to decide mostly based on (“out dated”) predictions when to change the oil. For this reasons, the operators tend to change the oil, just to be on the safe side, up to 3-4 month earlier than necessary, depending on the analysis intervals. There is a still unsolved need for a means of online monitoring providing the same accuracy as laboratory analysis. Having reliable, in-time and continuous data about the oil condition would allow to safely extend oil change intervals to a reasonable limit, resulting in significant economic and ecologic advantages.

ImmunoLipidots
Chemotherapy in cancer therapy often generates major side effects due to non targeted
delivery of chemotoxic agents to healthy tissue, or to leaks of chemotoxic agenst during blood
transport. therefore encapsulation represents a major challenge to improve drug bioavailability, its biodistribution and its pharmcokinetic. all in all, it improves teh therapeutic effects as well as teh patient's benefits. Using nanocarriers encapsulating drugs has been explored for some years and some nanodrugs like Abraxane or Doxil are already on the market. However the targeting of specific tissue like solid tumors or inflammaed tissue could significantly improve current therapies. Encapsulation of powerful chemotoxic agents can also protect healthy tissue.
The ImmunoLipidots project focuses on the preclinical proof of concept of a targeted drug
delivery combining the advanatges of organic fully biodegradable non toxic nanocarriers to the
efficacy of immunotrageting using antibodies as targeting agents.

Development of a novel, low-cost fireproof Insulation Material
The increasing requirements for energy efficiency, energy savings and fire prevention in
buildings, industrial installations and energy generation/conversion plants have led to
increasingly stringent European regulations on insulation efficiency. The same holds for the fire resistance of insulation products. Exactly here is the opportunity and driving force to develop a novel low-cost insulation material which can combine the lowest thermal conductivity values with optimum fire resistance. The use of insulated piping and other double-walled insulation products in ship building and traditional industrial installations is rather limited to date due to the high prices of these products. Novel insulation materials which can be combined with metal piping and panels in a fully automated production facility, would decrease the costing of insulation products to such an extent that the market which has already been lost (or threatens to be lost) by European companies could be regained. Similarly, interesting market opportunities could be realised in the transport sector (notably trains), the white good sector and specific products for fire resistance (such as fire blocking doors).

Automated Pollen Counting and Identification (APCAI)
The proposing company has been involved in a recent project, in collaboration with two
universities, that has focused on the measurement of a range of biological atmospheric
pollutants. The prototype instruments used have measured the particle size, particle shape
and intrinsic fluorescence characteristics to assign particles to biological classes. In the latter
part of the project much of the work has focused on the detection of pollen. Initial results have provided a very good indication of what would be required to give good discrimination of pollens from other types of atmospheric particle. There is additional evidence that spectral analysis may enable differentiation between pollen species, so enabling the discrimination of specific allergenic pollens. It is proposed to develop and field-trial an advanced prototype capable of achieving these objectives.

SocialScope
In 2010, for the first time in history, spending on Internet advertising surpassed newspaper
spending, a trend that will increase in the future. The large bulk of this spending was not just
online display ads but invested instead in non-traditional social media marketing programmes, involving multiple channels such as Twitter, social networks, blogs and more. Alongside the growth of social networks the birth of a new methodology of analysis: Social Network Analysis. This methodology, based on graph theory and social analysis, is of increasing importance in Marketing 2.0. As online marketing has shifted away from a model based on Click-through rates and impressions and has moved towards a less measurable model – with multiple transmitters of information (tweeters, bloggers, fans, etc.) it is becoming increasingly difficult to measure ROI for these types of marketing actions.

Eddy current tomography of advanced gas-cooled graphite reactor
An advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) is a gas-cooled nuclear reactor, using graphite as the
neutron moderator and carbon dioxide as coolant. When the reactor is on load the graphite
core is maintained at a temperature of approx 400C, a flow of carbon dioxide is used for heat
exchange with the core. Under these conditions radiolytic oxidation of graphite takes place,
reducing the density and slowly degrading mechanical properties of the graphite core, which
can lead to fracture due to thermal cycling fatigue. Nuclear energy industry demonstrates interest in acquiring non-destructive methods for measuring subsurface condition and properties of the graphite core. In particular methods for measuring the local variations in brick density and the density variation radially through the brick wall are of interest. Eddy current inspection is a prospective technique as there is a clear correlation between electrical conductivity and the level of porosity/graphite density.

TrappedPeople
Collapse of man-made structures, such as buildings and bridges, occur with varying frequency
across the world. In such a case, survived human beings are often trapped in the cavities created by collapsed building material. There is a strong need for implementation of a method for a safe, reliable, time- and labour-efficient, and most importantly, more exact estimation of the location of trapped victims.
